The Third Annual TVPRCRP All-Star Teams

July 15, 2013

The All Star Game sucks. I also can’t keep it consistent. All Star or All-Star? Regardless, democracy while it works for countries like America doesn’t always end up in results we are thrilled with, just ask the fine people of Cairo about how that works out. I don’t like the voting as it gets guys in who don’t deserve to be in. That said, at times it works well and voters get it right. My system is quite simple, the best player on every team should be in. I use WAR as my metric and FanGraphs’ version specifically. Second of all, I don’t buy into it 100% so I do tweak it every so often where I feel something potentially unfair lands someone on a team guys who benefit from abnormally low HR rates or amazing strand rates etc. – but a 1.7 WAR player doesn’t suddenly leap frog a 2.3 WAR player either. While many might not like it, every team should have one representative at the All Star Game. I then follow how each manager has constructed their team. This year this resulted in one player really being omitted who shouldn’t have been (the Cardinals backstop Yadier Molina) as the backup slot was filled by a must make it guy as the best member of his team (Brian McCann) but these sorts of things are inevitable. Outfield for my sake is considered one big position despite my vehement belief that the three are quite distinctive. Here we have them though, flaws and all, each asterisk will represent prior inclusion on an All-Star Team.

Yadier Molina doesn’t even make backup catcher because you have to take McCann over Freeman or Minor or Kimbrel? And yet you found room for Allen Craig and Trevor Rosenthal? This seems more convoluted than the actual fan voting and politicking…

Molina is the first real snub. I do it pretty near emotion free. I like starting off with each squads best player.
McCann comes up as such for Atlanta. You could make a fair argument that its all based on positional differences that his WAR is higher. Kimbrel was just on the outside looking in but I felt the relievers that came up were reasonable.
Minor wouldn’t have been included under any circumstances. Both Craig and Rosenthal are deserving. The way I did positions is just following what the actual managers themselves did. So had Bochy had an additional catcher as Leyland had we’d have been fine. Leyland inexplicably decided to carry few third basemen despite it being the AL’s best position so I had to omit very deserving players like Manny Machado and Adrian Beltre. Maybe I’ll tweak my process next year. I just sort of run the numbers and on the fringes make a few decisions (like picking Adam Jones over Brett Gardner).
