Update from PHX: March 17/Recap: Cubs @ A’s Game 21
March 17, 2013
- A’s took on a split-squad Cubs team today and won 12-6 at Phoenix Muni while wearing green for St. Patrick’s Day. Or maybe they just wore green because they wear green…
- Grant Green was not able to take advantage of the failures of others and was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento today along with Michael Taylor after the game (he started in right field). I am not entirely sure why Green hasn’t earned himself the right to stick around longer. Yes, Scott Sizemore has no options left but he isn’t hitting. Hiroyuki Nakajima isn’t hitting. Jemile Weeks hasn’t really played. Adam Rosales hit two home runs in today’s ballgame and seems assured a roster spot being out of options. Andy Parrino has looked solid but he’d need to be added to the 40-man roster. Green meanwhile, a former first round pick, has been solid: 22 plate appearances he has a .409/.409/.636 slash line with two K’s. Why not give him a look? I think it goes to something the great Rany on the Royals said when discussing that club’s surprising decision to take Luke Hochevar out of the starting rotation. He wrote of Kansas City, “every year in spring training, the Royals say that the better player will win the job, even though the winner appears to be a foregone conclusion. It’s not just the Royals – every team puts on the illusion of competition even though they’ve already made up their mind. And I (and lots of other people) honestly thought that was the situation here.” I have a feeling that is what is going on with the A’s at second base. I think this is Sizemore’s job regardless of his performance, especially given that he has no more options. Taylor meanwhile cut his pinkie and his chances at somehow sneaking onto this squad.
- Also reassigned to MiLB camp today were: Michael Choice, David Freitas, Brian Gordon, Scott Moore and Darwin Perez. Interesting to see the very hot Shane Peterson, who has seen a lot of time still with the big leaguers. He has 46 plate appearances and is hitting .439/.500/.707.
- A’s lineup for today was: Eric Sogard 2B, Peterson LF, Chris Young CF, Yoenis Cespedes DH, Brandon Moss 1B, John Jaso C, Josh Donaldson 3B, Nakajima SS, Taylor RF. Tommy Milone took the hill as did, Hideki Okajima, Sean Doolittle and Mike Ekstrom (who I think may very well make this club). Young, Donaldson and Rosales (twice) homered in this one as the A’s bats stayed alive. Sogard meanwhile is making a case for himself in that infield mess, with a 4-for-4 day that brought his Cactus League numbers up to .500/.545/.700 in 33 trips to the plate. I am not high on Sogard and just think he is a replacement-level player and would rather see the A’s move forward with a solution that could lead to something more promising or permanent in the future. I just don’t see him displacing Sizemore or Rosales though either.
