Update from PHX: February 22

February 22, 2013
  • Pitchers for tomorrow’s game were announced. Up against the Brew Crew in Maryvale will be Jesse Chavez, Justin Thomas, Bruce Billings, Mike Ekstrom, Arnold Leon and Fernando Rodriguez. In other spring opener news, Jemile Weeks will get the start at second base and leadoff with Scott Sizemore manning the designated hitter spot. Can’t say I like that. I just don’t see Weeks as an on base percentage guy and think if he is to be in the lineup he ought to be more down in the eighth or ninth spots. The A’s have battled this conundrum before with speed sort of trumping OBP with having Coco Crisp hit so early in recent years.
  • Bob Melvin said what every baseball fan is taught not to believe: that spring training stats matter. He said so specifically referencing the aforementioned Sizemore and Weeks. So it seems that their stats may mean something in winning this battle for second base. For what it is worth the A’s biggest bat last spring was Brandon Moss, so maybe there was some truth to what he put up: he went .500/.522/.773 with a home run in 23 trips to the plate. But among A’s regulars the top star was Cliff Pennington .385/.467/.487 so maybe then again they do mean nothing as Penny went on to a pretty awful season.
  • Yoenis Cespedes launched a bunch of bombs off of Melvin in batting practice including one with the weight on the bat!
  • Melvin did some wheeling and dealing and secured a DH game when the A’s go to play the DBacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick later this spring. That was in return for the A’s letting them use their facility when they got snowed out.
