Update from PHX: February 19

February 19, 2013
  • Bartolo Colon spoke to the media today about his suspension. He felt he let down his teammates. I don’t know necessarily that the A’s win the division if he didn’t get suspended. He faded down the stretch in 2012 and there are questions as to whether or not he’d have continued to excel going into the stretch. I am not crazy about Colon, but if he has made amends so be it. One interesting note is that apparently Bob Melvin did not know about the positive test when it happened, six weeks before he was suspended. Colon and his agent knew but no one else was shared on that information. That seems pretty bad of him, I get the trying to avoid a suspension or waiting for results to be finalized and such but way to let down your team. That seems worse than the actual crime in some respects. He apologized to the team one-on-one apparently, and would not disclose what he used and where it aided him.
  • Speaking of PEDs, the Biogenesis clinic in Miami claimed another Oakland victim today as Jordan Norberto‘s name was linked to it today. The A’s as of now have no comment. Former Athletics reliever Fautino De Los Santos was also in the latest report, though another former A’s hurler Gio Gonzalez has apparently been cleared of involvement. No word on how this will affect this “important bullpen piece”.
  • Grant Balfour is already playing catch and even more impressive for someone who had knee surgery a few days ago working out on a treadmill. I still think the four out of the four-to-six weeks looks more likely right now given his speedy recovery.
  • The A’s had one prospect on the top 100 prospects list from Baseball America: Addison Russell at #48. Last year the A’s had a few more on the list with Yoenis Cespedes (#14), Jarrod Parker (#26), Brad Peacock (#36), A.J. Cole (#57) and Sonny Gray (#65). Cespedes and Parker do not count as prospects anymore, but for what it is worth Peacock (sent to Houston), Cole (sent to Washington) and Gray (likely due to go to Sacramento) all fell off the list.
