Royals Claim Kottaras Off Waivers

January 25, 2013

Did anyone expect George Kottaras to clear waivers? No. Did I expect the A’s to be able to work out a trade for a reasonably priced and useful catcher? Yes. Needless to say the A’s did not managed to work out a trade and the Kansas City Royals claimed Kottaras off of waivers ending his term in Oakland. In 27 games and 93 plate appearances, Kottaras hit .212/.280/.471 with six home runs a wOBA of .322 and wRC+ of 105 for 0.4 WAR. Kottaras was rendered useless with the acquisition of John Jaso who will hit against right-handed pitchers in a platoon with the right-handed Derek Norris.

I am a bit upset that the A’s couldn’t swing a trade and get something back for Kottaras. It seems that it would have been more useful to have kept him on the 40-man roster and maybe dealt him when some club has the inevitable catcher go down in Spring Training. What it is about Jesse Chavez that keeps him on the 40-man roster continues to mystify me. The Royals who claimed Kottaras for example now have three catchers on their 40-man, so it isn’t like some insane proposition to carry three backstops.

I would expect anyone who hits a 10th inning HR to help their faltering team maintain momentum going into the final homestand of the season to have some intrinsic worth regardless of what position they play. I know Beane well enough, however, to know that he has little regard to such ‘intangibles’ (also re: Pennington, Scutaro).

Guess they can always get some of these guys back if they are in the right position.
