Godfrey Sent to Red Sox
The A’s acquired Sandy Rosario, who they have signed designated for assignment, for a player to be named later. Today that player was named and it is Graham Godfrey. Godfrey, who at one point was the A’s fourth starter last season came to the A’s in the trade that sent Marco Scutaro to Toronto. In 2012 he pitched 21 innings in Oakland amassing 4.3 K/9, 4/3 BB/9 and 1.7 HR/9 en route to a 6.43 ERA in line with his 6.48 FIP altogether good for -0.2 WAR. For his entire Oakland career (which is also his entire MLB career), he has thrown 46 innings of 4.5 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9 baseball for a 5.09 ERA and 5.27 FIP and a weak -0.1 WAR.
Godfrey spent the bulk of 2012 in Sacramento where he pitched passably in 104 innings earning himself a 3.29 ERA, but a weaker 4.06 FIP backed by 5.2 K/9, 2.3 BB/9 and 0.7 HR/9. It isn’t clear how Godfrey will figure in the Red Sox plans, but I have to believe they only envision him being MiLB filler as he has been largely unimpressive in his admittedly limited exposure to MLB hitters. This trade seems a wash at this point even with Rosario potentially never even taking to the pitching rubber as an Athletic as we await to see if he clears waivers and is able to be outrighted off the 40-man.
