Godfrey Outrighted to Sacramento
This did not come even remotely as a surprise to me but Graham Godfrey cleared waivers today and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento. Godfrey is 28, a not particularly enticing “prospect” and would seem ill-fitted to be on many a team’s 40-man roster, today that was proven true by the 29 other teams and the A’s. Godfrey has thrown 46 MLB innings with Oakland across the last two seasons, pitching to a 5.09 ERA to go with 4.5 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9 (despite pitching at the very home run forgiving Coliseum) for a 5.27 FIP.
Despite making the A’s rotation out of spring training, I would expect that the words “organizational filler” will follow Godfrey for the majority of the remainder of his professional baseball career. He already is buried on the A’s depth chart and with him off the 40-man roster it seems even a decent pitching performance (akin to what Bruce Billings has done for most of the year) will not ever get him the look he desires back with the big league club. I have no specific problems with Godfrey, he just is not as talented as the many arms in front of him in Oakland’s pecking order.
