Threets Released at his Request
Earlier this season, seeing now chance at making the Major League roster, Manny Ramirez asked for his release and was granted it. Today, a lesser light asked for his release and the A’s granted it. Erick Threets, a 30-year-old minor league signing from the offseason and Hayward native requested his release after a 44 inning, 6.3 K/9, 3.9 BB/9 (though no home runs allowed) stint at Sacramento where he racked up a 1.84 ERA to go with a strong 3.15 FIP.
With the likes of Jim Miller already added to the roster, as well as guys like Pedro Figueroa riding the Sacramento to Oakland shuttle, Threets did not really do anything to differentiate himself and earn a trip up the pros. Despite that when guys like him request their release you always wonder how big of a risk is that? Is there one of the other 29 organizations racing to make an addition like Threets to their Triple-A filler? Does that really offer him a better opportunity to make his MLB dream come true? You have to think it is quite the gamble. With respect to the Oakland bullpen situation, this doesn’t really change much of anything so can’t say this move will have any monumental consequences. One thing I wonder is if this was caused by the addition of a pitcher with a similar sort of profile in Chris Ray yesterday. Can’t imagine Ray scares that many in terms of stealing their jobs, but maybe this was a last straw?
