Fuentes to St. Louis?
Former A’s sometime closer Brian Fuentes has been at home in Merced since he was designated for assignment by the A’s. But he may have a potential suitor as Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweeted in something slightly less than English,
“the #STLCards have some interest in veteran lefty Brian Fuentes, who the a’s are DFA’ed & are trying to trade.”
While the Cardinals may have interest in Fuentes, I see no chance that the A’s actually will trade him there. Fuentes is being paid $5M this season with a club option for next year that contains a $500K buyout, so let’s safely assume that this is a $5.5M commitment that is about half complete for this year give or take (as the full buyout would still be on the board). Is that really worth it for St. Louis? Is there another team that could really snatch Fuentes away from them? I presume the New York Mets may have some interest, but I just don’t see Fuentes signing some sort of minor league deal, and furthermore I just don’t see competition as being that rough, so why not wait until he clears release waivers, or rejects an outright assignment (I doubt the A’s even attempt to outright him) and pay full value when you can pay league minimum and be near assured of landing your man?
Can’t say I’d be surprised to see him end up in St. Louis but if A’s fans are dreaming of getting something back for him, keep dreaming.
