Manny Ramirez Given His Release
The Sacramento River Cats are at home and scheduled to play the Tacoma Rainiers today. One player who will not be playing with them is Manny Ramirez who requested his release and was granted it by the Oakland A’s today. Ramirez who had been hitting better as of late, still had pretty lackluster numbers with Sacramento sporting a .300/.328/.350 slash line but with just a .306 wOBA and 77 wRC+ to his credit. In his 16 games and 64 plate appearances he had no home runs and an anemic 4.7% BB%. He is set to return to his home in Florida and plans on seeking an opportunity elsewhere.
Can’t say I am upset about this. This was a solid signing by the A’s in the sense that they could have picked up someone at little to no risk, and while for a while I feared he’d be added regardless of his performance thankfully the A’s chose to have him earn a spot on the team. The resurgence of Seth Smith and the emergence of Collin Cowgill spelled the end for Ramirez as there was no place for him to go. One ramification that I think this move could cause, is if Kila Ka’aihue does indeed clear waivers he may just be outrighted to Sacramento as there now seemingly would be at least a place for him to get playing time. Otherwise this really benefits Chris Carter who should see more playing time at designated hitter now with the River Cats.
