Live Blogging: Rangers @ A’s Game 55

June 4, 2012

A struggling A’s team gets the unfair task of now having to battle the division leading Rangers. Scott Feldman is on the mound for the Rangers. He comes in with some pretty unimpressive numbers so it is a good chance for the A’s to possibly steal a win back home: 4.1 K/9, 4.5 BB/9 and 1.1 HR/9 with a 4.50 ERA and 5.22 FIP. The A’s counter with Jarrod Parker who has 6.4 K/9, 4.7 BB/9 and 0.2 HR/9 in 40 2/3 innings with a 2.88 ERA and 3.53 FIP. Collin Cowgill again gets the start out in left field, nice to see him in there. Also interesting to see Jemile Weeks starting the game and leading off as it means he clearly isn’t seriously injured.

  • 7:14PM PDT – Top of 1st, 3 out – Josh Hamilton caught stealing second to end the inning. Don’t really want to end an inning on a stolen base, wonder if they thought the rookie Parker wouldn’t be as attentive as he should be and tried to test Kurt Suzuki?
  • 7:25PM PDT – Top of 2nd, 1 out – Gets a second trip to the plate and Adrian Beltre is K’d by Parker.
  • 7:35PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 0 out – A Yoenis Cespedes walk, a Seth Smith single and with the infield drawn in as if anticipating a bunt, home run! Three run shot by Brandon Inge. A’s get a 3-0 lead. Wow imagine that three runs! All at once too!
  • 7:39PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 0 out – Kurt Suzuki with a single, another straight hit from the A’s following Kila Ka’aihue‘s. Everyone getting on so far.
  • 7:41PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 0 out – Cliff Pennington breaks his 0-for-29 streak with a double to right field. Kila scores, 4-0 Oakland.
  • 7:42PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 0 out – Where were all these guys last week? Weeks with a single to score two and make it Oakland 6, Texas 0. And reliever Robbie Ross gets up in the Rangers bullpen.
  • 7:52PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 2 out – Single for Smith! Two more runs score. Rangers now are down 8-0 to the suddenly no longer hapless A’s.
  • 7:53PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 2 out – That’ll be it for Feldman. An outing to forget for him. Ross is coming in, the rookie has 27 2/3 innings under his belt this year, with a 1.63 ERA but much higher 3.41 FIP on 5.9 K/9, 2.0 BB/9 and 0.7 HR/9.
  • 7:55PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 2 out – Another hit from Inge. Smith scores. 9-0 A’s. Book closed on Feldman: one and two thirds innings, eight earned runs (43.20 ERA in the game as the season ERA goes from 4.50 to 7.01) on seven hits with a home run allowed, one walk, three K’s.
  • 8:19PM PDT – Top of 4th, 3 out – Big strikeout of Hamilton. On draft day, Parker is showing off why he was a first rounder.
  • 8:25PM PDT – Bottom of 4th, 3 out – Cespedes hits into a tailor made 6-4-3 double play. Easy to deal with that when you’re up 8-0 isn’t it?
  • 8:33PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 3 out – Parker is just dealing today. Great seeing that along with the offense working too. Now out to pitch for the Rangers is Mark Lowe who has a 2.53 ERA, 3.20 FIP and 8.4 K/9, 2.5 BB/9, 0.8 HR/9 in 21 1/3 innings.
  • 8:34PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 0 out – Smith with a triple off the glove of David Murphy. Great stuff on that opposite field hit.
  • 8:37PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 1 out – Home run for Ka’aihue! Nelson Cruz was looking like he didn’t know where it was and that is because it was over the fence! 10-0 lead for the A’s! Wow. When it rains…
  • 8:48PM PDT – Top of 6th, 3 out – 1-2-3 inning for Parker as he strikes out Mitch Moreland for his fifth strikeout.
  • 8:51PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 0 out – Yoshinori Tateyama comes out to throw for Ron Washington‘s Rangers. Some ugly numbers in limited time this year with a 15.19 ERA, 8.07 FIP in five and a third innings. A bit more impressive with Triple-A Round Rock where he threw 16 2/3 innings of 0.54 ERA, 3.02 FIP baseball.
  • 8:55PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 3 out – Two straight K’s for Tateyama, the only Rangers pitcher who has looked really sharp today.
  • 8:58PM PDT – Top of 7th, 1 out – Ian Kinsler hits one deep. Cespedes goes out and gets it. He had to go a long way there, it hung up a bit with the marine layer. Eight more outs…
  • 9:01PM PDT – Top of 7th, 1 out – Elvis Andrus draws a walk first baserunner after setting down twelve straight. To this point Parker has faced the minimum. He’d need to get a double play or something here to keep that streak alive.
  • 9:03PM PDT – Top of 7th, 2 out – Strike three. Hamilton down again. Seven more outs…
  • 9:04PM PDT – Top of 7th, 3 out – One over the minimum. Beltre grounds out to Inge. Six more outs…
  • 9:12PM PDT – Bottom of 7th, 1 out – Smith is 4-for-4 in this one and is in need of a home run for him to get the cycle as he doubles over the head of Hamilton. Everything is clicking on all six cylinders for Oakland in this one. Actually it was a nice play by Hamilton to play that weird carom off the wall.
  • 9:19PM PDT – Top of 8th, 0 out – Straight over the pitcher’s mound right into center field, up the middle. If you are going to give up a hit, Michael Young is a guy that you can give it up to. He is no joke. So the Rangers get their first hit of the game. Parker seemed upset with himself there, but that is a tough play to make. Young hit it on the screws.
  • 9:21PM PDT – Top of 8th, 3 out – 4-3 double play. Man. Such a short inning, four pitches. Annoying that that hit was allowed or there might not have been any questioning of pitch counts or anything as he now stands at just 111. Jim Miller is up in the bullpen but I’d love to have Parker get the chance to close it out. Unlike that Bartolo Colon game in Baltimore, Parker is staked to a ten run lead, give him a shot to get the shutout, if he allows a hit you can throw Miller in with no consequences.
  • 9:23PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 0 out – Craig Gentry, yes – the speedy outfielder Gentry, comes out to pitch. This is his MLB debut.
  • 9:25PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 1 out – Pennington gets a hit off of Gentry. Love the pitch f/x: two “changeups” to Suzuki 78 and 79 mph before Pennington seeing an 84 mph “changeup” before getting his single off of an 86 mph “cutter”.
  • 9:27PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 2 out – Cowgill with a hit off of an 82 mph “changeup” now is 1-for-5. He had been the only A’s hitter without a hit in this contest, but now all starting nine can say they got a hit.
  • 9:28PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 2 out – Amazing how quickly the speed is tapering off for the position player pitching. Four pitch walk to Josh Reddick, all on “changeups” and the speed went from 83 to 84 to 80 to 78.
  • 9:29PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 2 out – Two run double for Cespedes. A’s lead 12-0.
  • 9:30PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 3 out – Smith flies out to Hamilton. No cycle for him. Think that’s about it for all the exciting milestones we can see in this one.
  • 9:33PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – Jonny Gomes is in in left field with Cespedes being pulled from the game and Cowgill sliding to center. Hopefully this is not indicative of any injury or problem with Cespedes. But there is no way that Gomes, despite being a better fielder than I expected, stands in as a defensive replacement. Miller meanwhile comes in to pitch so far he has a 1.32 ERA, 3.08 FIP with 7.9 K/9, 2.0 BB/9 and 0.7 HR/9 in 13 2/3 innings.
  • 9:35PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – 3-2 pitch to Mike Napoli and there goes the shutout on Napoli’s tenth home run of the year to right center field. That’s frustrating. A’s still lead of course, 12-1.
  • 9:43PM PDT – Top of 9th, 2 out – As I’ve long said, he isn’t always pretty but he gets it done as Hamilton flies out to Gomes in left field with him having to slide to get it.
  • 9:45PM PDT – Top of 9th, 3 out – Miller K’s Beltre. A’s win! Great outing from the offense, even better outing from Parker! A’s win!
