Is Casey Blake a Fit for Oakland?
The Colorado Rockies released third baseman Casey Blake today. Blake had signed a non-guaranteed contract worth $2M with additional performance bonuses attached this past December. Blake was worth 1.1 WAR last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 63 games, hitting four home runs in his 239 plate appearances. He had a .252/.342/.371 slash line and a .314 wOBA and 99 wRC+. He is a decent defensive third baseman.
The A’s still don’t have a settled situation at third base with Josh Donaldson and Eric Sogard being the leading candidates – presently it looks like they may platoon over there. Blake wouldn’t be the worst option and probably would cost less than the $2M that the Rockies paid him and would be a relative steal that the A’s could ship off at the deadline. If Billy Beane opted to get Blake it wouldn’t be the worst option on earth and would give the A’s a bit of latitude at a very weak position. I still feel Sogard is best used as a reserve infielder and that Adam Rosales‘ utility isn’t really there anymore.
