Magnuson Moves, Timmons Re-ups and Weeks is Untouchable

November 4, 2011

There were three pieces of A’s news today. Trystan Magnuson who was recently DFA’d by the A’s was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations – interesting as Magnuson was originally acquired in a trade that sent Rajai Davis north of the border. Even more ironic is that the other player acquired in that trade was pitcher Danny Farquhar whom the A’s also traded back to Toronto in exchange for David Purcey. It seems to me he may not have been able to clear waivers as I’d suspected.

The A’s also re-upped minor league infielder Wes Timmons on a minor-league deal. He split the season between Sacramento and Midland posting a combined .341/.420/.468 between the two. I wouldn’t expect much of a role for Timmons with the 2012 A’s unless there are significant injuries to members of the infield.

Finally, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports reports that Billy Beane is listening to offers on any and all A’s excluding Jemile Weeks. He writes,

“whatever happens, they [Oakland] again figure to go young.

That likely means parting with 30-something free agents such as outfielders Coco Crisp, Josh Willingham and David DeJesus.

It also means being open to trade offers for anyone on the roster with the exception of second baseman Jemile Weeks, according to major-league sources.”

Not surprising, nor noteworthy news but I have to wonder why have Weeks even be off the table? Anyone and everyone can and should be available for the right price.
